Valentine’s Day is not too far away so I decided to ask a few of my friends and some clients what their worst Valentine’s Day gifts were. Some of them were not so bad but there were some that make you just shake your head. Some people just need help in the gift-giving department. Here are 6 things NOT to get your significant other, and the one thing she MUST get.

6. Candles

Candles might seem like a good gift to give your significant other especially if she uses them often but valentine’s day is not the day to gift them unless they are accompanied by something else like a home-cooked 3 course dinner lit by said candle. You can use candles to set the mood but keep them as a secondary or add on gift.

5. Clean Supplies / Kitchen Appliances

Unless your significant other is an obsessive compulsive and takes frequent trips to the grocery store to stock up on cleaning supplies, “fuh-get about it”. Kitchen appliances are the same. If she loves the kitchen she probably has all she needs already.

4. Workout Gear / Gym Membership / Diet Pills

This one is a big no-no. For one, it’s usually better to start the year off with the gym membership. If she forgot to set her resolution to lose weight, now is not the time to remind her. You might have her best interest at heart but the not so subtle hint could backfire. Who wants to be reminded that they need to lose weight? A better alternative would be to schedule dance lessons for the both of you.

3. Underwear Made of Food

2. Breakup Text / Note

Who writes notes anymore? The break up text comes in at second place because this is a low blow. If you’re trying to get back at your significant other, this may be the way to go but you’re bigger and better than that. If you’re going to break it off, do it a week or two before valentine’s day or a few days after. If you wait until after then don’t plan on getting her anything for valentine’s day. Which leads me to the number one worst gift to give…

1. Nothing At All

You might not “believe” in this day and she might not either but unless you both spoke about not exchanging gifts beforehand then you should get her something. In fact, get her something even if you spoke about not exchanging gifts. Choose from one of the 4 options above because, at the end of the day, it’s the thought that counts.

After all of that I bet you’re asking “so, what do I give her?”. Read on, my friend.
